About Compass Rose Studio

What's in a name, Compass Rose Studio?

A compass rose has been illustrated on maps, oceanic charts, and historic atlases since as early as 1200AD to display direction (N, NE, S, SE, W, etc...).

Amy's passion for art, the sea, and vintage maps led to her inspiration for Compass Rose Studio. The word compass is based on the Latin word 'com' (together) and 'passus' (a step or pace). In a sense, the milestone you are celebrating in your life and the direction you're headed. The 'rose' is derived from the elaborate and ornate petal designs illustrated on early compasses. Together, Compass and Rose is quite beautiful.

About Compass Rose Studio

Amy Mac, Owner & Artist

Amy is an independent artist with over a decade of illustration and print production experience.

She started drawing when she was old enough to hold a pencil and simply never stopped. As an innate animal lover, her early years were dedicated to bringing animals to life on paper. When she wasn’t drawing bunnies and chipmunks, Amy focused on gorgeous landscapes; likely, the result of growing up with a forest for a backyard and a creek where a swimming pool would traditionally go. Amy drew anything and everything around her.

To this day she sticks to her roots. Before touching a keyboard and mouse, Amy sketches designs by hand. She opened Compass Rose Studio because she truly enjoys working with clients at a personal level to create custom, hand-crafted stationery.

Mike Villano, Everything Else

In October 2015, Amy and Mike married on a secluded island beach, and with that, he inherited the "everything else" role at Compass Rose Studio. His goal is to handle everything else behind the scenes at Compass Rose Studio, so Amy can focus on creating new designs and working one-on-one with her clients (what she enjoys the most!). Mike loves what he does, but admits his favorite contribution is taking the studio manager for her daily walk.

About Compass Rose Studio

Buffy, Studio Manager

We immediately saw Buffy's potential when we adopted her from the Humane Society, but we are so proud of how quickly she has been promoted to Studio Manager. Buffy goes above and beyond, by volunteering part of her day to secure the Studio, so the mailman does NOT break in when Amy is working. The other part of her day is dedicated strictly to napping.
